Any workout, especially a rigorous one, causes microscopic damage to the body's muscles and tissues, explains Dr. Alan Beyer, sports medicine doctor and executive medical director of the Hoag Orthopedic Institute in California. It's this inflammation that triggers the body's repair processes, allowing tissues to grow back stronger and fitter. However, too much inflammation left unchecked can contribute to excessive muscle damage and poor workout results. Inflammation is also a hallmark of exercise injuries including strains and sprains, he says.
For this reason, exercisers commonly integrate anti-inflammatory measures – such as eating antioxidant-rich foods and taking ice baths – into their workout routines to aid the workout process.
Given these effects, it’s not surprising that many fitness enthusiasts and athletes are beginning to use CBD as a workout recovery tool.
CBD is one of the main therapeutic compounds found in cannabis. It may have several post-workout benefits, including:
Reducing inflammation. CBD may be extremely effective in managing inflammation pre-and post-exercise. This may prevent joint injury during physical activity, as well as reducing any pain from swelling that may prevent you from training properly.
Reducing pain. CBD helps alleviate pain, a common by-product of intense training. Many athletes use CBD following their workouts to continue managing pain from achy muscles, joints and injuries.
Decreasing Nausea: Exercising at a heavy rate causes blood flow to be taken away from the stomach which may cause nausea. Cannabis has anti-emetic effects, helping athletes reduce nausea during and after exercise.
Improving sleep. CBD may be able to improve sleep, indirectly aiding workout recovery.
Reduction of Muscle Spasms: Cannabinoids are known to have antispasmodic properties. Some causes of muscle spasms in athletes include straining of a muscle, dehydration, trauma, and damage to nerves or to the spinal cord.
CBD is growing particularly popular with people who undergo strenous training.Having said that, the main issue with CBD is that there are currently no studies that examine its use in the context of workout recovery.
